Seasides and cricket

Posted by Julie Voyce on July 23, 2007 4:15 PM |

I could hardly believe it when I saw the newspapers today. It looks as if the country is underwater, but I have been blissfully unaware. You see I decided to take a trip to Brighton on Saturday to spend the weekend with a friend. I arrived to beautiful sunshine so we headed to the beach where we spent the rest of the day. No evening news for me, a trip to the pub meant I didn't see any television all day.
Usually I get the newspapers on a Sunday and head back to bed to have a good read, but as I was away and the sun was shining once more we decided to head to the marina for coffee and then a bit of shopping. As it was so hot we decided to spend the afternoon on the beach again. I even had an ice cream for the first time this summer. Eventually I had to pack up my blanket and head home at about 7pm.
It was only when I arrived back in Chesham, with sunburnt cheeks, that I realised how lucky I have been. My partner was still angry at the fact his afternoon of cricket had been rained off again. I thought he was joking but apparently the pitch was waterlogged. It didn't improve his mood when I smugly described my day.
Still, if you choose cricket over a weekend away at the seaside it's only fair the weather makes you pay!

I can identify with this story. On the same day I persuaded my husband to pretend it was summer and head off on our first ever trip to Eastbourne.
We were rewarded with beautiful warm sunshine whilst we enjoyed fish' n chips on the beach, a boat trip to Beachy Head, a drink on the decking of a beach cafe, an ice cream whilst strolling along the prom, to the strains of a brass band. Idyllic. And all this only two hours away from Chalfont St Peter.
