Elvis lives!

I had a brilliant night out last night when I went to see The Elvis Years at The Elgiva in Chesham. I took my dad, a lifelong Elvis fan, as a thank you for all the work he has helped me with on my house over the last few months - I say helped me with, I really mean done. It was much better than giving him a bottle of plonk, we had a really good night.
People were up dancing in the aisles and merrily singing along, you could almost forget you were in Chesham!
Amusingly TV presenters Tess Daly and Vernon Kay came along to watch the performance. They were obviously just trying to have a quiet night out so snuck in just before the lights went down and sat in a corner right at the back. However in the second act Elvis comes out to the audience and he picked on Tess to sing to. She is so beautiful you can see instantly why he would have picked her. Anyway I am not sure he recognised them to begin with, but certainly had twigged by the end of the show as he thanked the audience for coming, especially Tess and Vernon. So much for trying to blend in to the crowd! I felt a bit sorry for them as they scuttled off before the lights went up. However, they probably didn't have too much to worry about. I think most people in the audience were of an age where they didn't have a clue who Tess and Vern were!
I actually got to meet Elvis after the show. He's from Muswell Hill, rather spoilt the illusion!

Shocked by drink drive results

Posted by Julie Voyce on September 12, 2007 11:50 AM

Another madly busy week, but I like it like that, the days just seem to fly by!
On Friday I went to the business speed networking event at Chesham Park School and am pleased to report that I really enjoyed it. The way the event worked was that small groups of pupils had five minutes to talk to the different business people, me included. Every five minutes a whistle was blown and the pupils moved on, a bit like speed dating.
The pupils all had interesting questions for me and it was good fun. The hour I was there flew by. It was nice to meet the pupils who were all well mannered. I had been a bit nervous as I wasn't sure what they might ask or whether they would be interested in what I had to say, if they weren't they at least hid it well!
This week's papers are filled with a broad mix of stories. In the Examiner we have a magistrate who thinks he has the answer to Chesham's anti-social behaviour problems as well as the news that Chesham has come up trumps in the Thames and Chiltern in Bloom contest.
In the Advertiser we investigate what having the incinerator in Gerrards Cross could do to house prices, and it isn't good news.
All papers carry the rather disturbing story that one in seven motorists stopped during the summer drink drive campaign failed a breath test. Quite a scary statistic which shows the message just isn't getting through.

Speed dating - with a twist!

Posted by Julie Voyce on September 4, 2007 11:05 AM

I'm going speed dating on Friday, but before anyone goes running to tell the Mr that I am on the hunt for a new man let me explain, it's speed dating, but not as we know it!
For starters it is at 9am on a Friday morning, so there will be no cheeky cocktails to relax me into the event. Secondly those involved are GCSE students.
Confused? So was I until I read the whole invitation.
It is actually a speed dating business event where I will sit with other local business people and we are visited every five minutes by pupils at Chesham Park School, where the event is being held, so they can quiz us about our jobs and how we got started.
I thought it sounded really interesting and a very novel way for the pupils to find out about lots of different jobs.
It is certainly more interesting than the things I did at school for careers lessons. I think they involved talking to a careers advisor who clearly didn't have a clue what to say when I told her I wanted to be a journalist. I think she tried to talk me into becoming a secretary or child carer, and this was in the 1990s! How things have progressed.
I'm a little nervous about the event as some teenagers can be a bit scary! I'll report back on Friday and let you know how I get on.
